SIME Talks 2: Gambling Expert - Niklas Jonsson speaks: “We miss the Windows and Internet Explorer in Mobile Gambling”

The grey area between gaming and gambling has always been interesting. It’s grey, oh yes, it is. No one even knows where the grey boundary begins and ends, but we all know that there is some invisible force that splits Gaming and Gambling. And in this grey area, people do create interesting things and are opportunistic in finding the gold mine. Gaming / gambling has only got more interesting over time.

SIME had the chance to catch up with Niklas Jonsson, who has been on the management of Svenska Spel for 9 years, being an intrapreneur, building and innovating within the big Swedish state owned gambling monopoly, and boy he had some interesting view points on how the gambling landscape is evolving.

The video of the interview (with some wind and kids in the background adding to the lullaby) is below:

In short, the essence is:

  • Gambling industry is consolidating, and are looking for new distribution models. Mobile is getting interesting, so is browser gaming.
  • We miss a standard like Internet Explorer and Windows for mobile based gambling / gaming
  • The search for the next “poker” continues
  • And the grey area between gaming and gambling get more complex due to the absence of 1 legal entity / body that governs the multi billion dollar gambling industry

SIME Talks - inspired from TED

We all love TED, great inspiration, great knowledge and great entertainment. Quite interestingly, TED has this weekly routine of putting up their talk shows as TED Talks for the world to see. And we thought why not we spread knowledge the same way through our nodes at SIME. So came to life the idea of having SIME Talks.

SIME Talks will feature interviews from some of the pioneers and innovators in the digital arena, mostly from Sweden to begin with, and as we get closer to the SIME days, we will have more from our international friends. Of course there will be some archive material from previous SIME that are still relevant. We already have one from Stephen Parish, a propeller head from SUN Microsystems below, talking about why startup’s need to watch out for the price of failure more than the cost of success, and how cloud computing is helping reduce the price of failure, a very poignant statement indeed. So beginning next Wednesday July 29, there will be talks that go live in the SIME blog every week for us to start a discussion about.

We encourage all of you to take this opportunity to discuss, engage and connect with like minded souls around the SIME ecosystem. And oh, we also have a series of guest bloggers lined up for the fall who are very happy to share some of their interesting thoughts. And there is also going to be some cross posting from Thomas Crampton’s blog, Martin Varsavsky and other thought leaders in the coming days.

Wishing you all happy inspiration times!

SIME Google Groups: a chance for you to talk and connect

In our effort to be open, audience centric and to involve the rock stars of our show (its you guys out there) better, we have decided to open up a SIME Google Group solely for you to talk, broadcast relevant information, share invites to interesting services, information about conferences, and interesting breakthrough news that concern all of us. Its a free open group (with a little bit of moderation from our end) that we are very glad to invite all of you to. You can probably subscribe to a digest email which will send you all the updates from the Group’s activities on a daily basis as email which is convenient since you can probably even read the information when you are offline.

So the URL is here : http://groups.google.com/group/sime-group

SIME Talks 1: SUN Propeller Head, Stephen Parish - “It’s not the price of success but the cost of failure”

I personally find the headline to be very catchy. Although I heard it for the first time with a teeny weeny dose of champagne in the blood and brushed off the initial introspection “hmmm” as the side effect of the fermented yeast in the drink, on re-thinking couple of times I felt there needed to be more meat into that sentence to get me thinking so much. So off I set in recollecting the person who actually came up with this catchy line and it turns out that it was from one of the lovely friends of the SIME house, Stephen Parish, (pretty interesting ideas in his blog), a propeller head in the SUN Microsystem family. And he gladly accepted my invite to take a little bit of time to talk more about what he actually meant.

Below is the youtube embed of the interview with him. (2.50 minutes)

For Start Up’s, this is a must-see

Really, SUN is quite much focusing on providing more robust infrastructure through cheaper data storage, faster accessibility times combining the power of SSD’s and SATA disk capabilities together with standard X86 servers. Some interesting tidbits from their site in the following 2 links:

1. Cloud Computing Solutions, Products, Demos, Videos and Tutorials

2. Start up Essentials: If you are a start up, its probably worth spending some time going through this page

Actually, its quite funny that Stephen may soon be part of the Oracle family that will be lead by a man named Larry Ellison who thinks its all “mainstream buzzwords” (AKA Bullshit) and today’s cloud computing has always existed as a lesser known sister from the early days of the internet. A highly recommended video of his famous ” What the hell is cloud computing” is here.

And with the merger together with Oracle, it is quite interesting times on how these giants plan to focus on their business verticals. SUN being one of the partners for SIME 2009, catch them this year as they travel with the SIME crew and will have some good presence in the Stockholm edition!
