SIME Talks – the Digest Edition
Posted by mahesh in SIME News | Nov 4, 2009 @ 8:26SIME Talks has got great traction. Modeled loosely on the TED Talks, we made it a habit at SIME to dig up interesting SIME content and post it every week as SIME Talks. And the whole exercise surprised us every single time. We found the SIME 2008 and 2007 content to still be completely relevant. Call it the death of the cruise gear in the digital landscape, or just may be SIME was doing good predicting the future, it is quite just surprising. With so many changes in the landscape, its hard to believe that the gears have fallen back and the wheels are coming to a halt. So quite surely, the speakers at SIME are visionaries, thought leaders who envision the crystal ball and are quite accurate in reading through it.
This post is a digest of all the SIME Talks till date. Of course, you can also watch all the SIME Talks using the tag “sime-talks”. That is http://sime.nu/tag/sime-talks.
In any case, listed below is quick summary of all the interviews along with individual links to the respective SIME Talk. Enjoy the collection!
#1. Stephen Parish, SUN Microsystem “Cost of success vs price of failure”
It all started with Stephen Parish, SUN Microsystems talking about the cost of success vs price of failure. Cloud Computing and the tools have reduced the cost of failure, and entrepreneurs have more room to play around with their ideas from the head and see it live in a matter of hours. The barrier to try out new ideas and concepts has never been so low. SUN is quite much pioneering this space on finding tools and tool kits to make it easier. The talk is here
#2 Niklas Jonsson, Svenska Spel, former Management, current CEO Bidster.com “We miss the standard in mobile gambling”
We shifted gears into Gambling and Gaming mode by interviewing Niklas Jonsson, former management of Svenska Spel, current CEO of Bidster.com. He sorely misses a standard in the gambling industry, a Windows and IE of sorts that can bring things more closer, especially on the mobile. And the quest for the next poker is full on. The talk is here
#3 Henrik Ahlen, “Dear Company, think videos”
Henrik Ahlen, an avid Swedish video expert who is working with everything videos is quite desperate to spur more corporates to use videos as a means of communication and reaching out to the masses. All about creating the journey, the story through video, he has his task cut out to make sure he does his bit in spurring adoption and education people about videos and the platforms. #4. Bjorn Falkevik, “There is no prime time on the internet; there is only prime space”
Continuing in the same genre on the video front, Bjorn Falkevik, a video enthusiast, and most important live streaming addict spoke about “the lack of prime time on the internet, and how there is only prime space”. A very poignant statement, and one of the talks that was the highlight of the SIME Talks Episode. The talk is here
#5. David Sifry, founder Technorati, “Love what you do”
Taking the ante up a bit, we found some gold in the SIME Digital Tape Archive in the form of an interview with David Sifry, founder Technorati, and Offbeatguides. Straight to the point, and quite innocently denying the claim to be the “king” who got structure to the other chaotic blogosphere couple of years ago, he wants you to love what you do, something we lose over time, only to reflect back a little too late in time. The talk is here
#6. Women and the Tech World – is it a bad marriage
Number 6 brought the focus light on women and their supposed bad marriage to the tech world. Why do men always outnumber women in every board meeting, every conference, every speaker roster? The talk is here
#7. Bob de Martino, former SUN Microsystems, “The network is the computer”
It takes years for a vision statement to come true, and none other than SUN Microsystem can testify to that. A statement made by John Gage much before I was born, SUN has got its foot closer to that vision through its cloud computing platform adding a strategic agile component to companies. The talk is here
#8. Jimmy Wales, founder Wikimedia Foundation, “Human Optimism is the DNA of Change”
When questioned what is the DNA of change, out came a prompt reply saying its human optimism by Jimmy Wales. A crisp statement that has a very deep significance. And Matt Bross, CTO of British Telecom also talks about innovation at the speed of life as the DNA of Change. Gold, pure gold statement we would say. The talk is her
#9. Morten Lund, the bull shit edition.
No statements, just watch the talk here. Anyone who has met Morten or seen him talk would say “Ah, classic Morten”. The talk is here
#10. Johan Siwers, Match.com “May the love be strong in you, else there is Match.com” , making love happen
The cupid if one might call, Johan Siwers talks about the success stories of Match.com and how he makes love happen. The talk is here
#11. Mia Rose, the youtube sensation “Its all about being honest”
One of the most successful youtube artist of all time, Mia Rose, a speaker at SIME 08 says its about being honest with your audience. Say what you want to say, keep it simple and let the content speak louder. Mia performed with Ace of Base (who did a SIME special getting together after a long gap of 12 years) at last year’s SIME Awards. The talk is here
#12. Annie Wegelius, SVT, Program Director – Innovation in the Public Services Company
SVT (Sveriges Television) is the Swedish public service television company with the widest range of programming of all TV companies in Sweden. Following a completely non commercial route (no advertisements), Swedes wherever they might be are happy to pay a licensing fee to tune into the most trusted Swedish media. Annie talks about pioneering innovation in this ‘beast’ as she calls it. A person who talks her talk, very impressive ideas and style of execution, a must-watch. The talk is here
#13. Esther Dyson, Queen of the US Internet, she talks we listen.
Predictions and crystal ball reading cannot be done more accurate. Esther Dyson talks , we listen. A must watch again. The talk is here
#14. Kjell Aamodt, former CEO Schibsted, talks about changes in the media landscape.
Schibsted has grown to become one of Scandinavia’s largest media houses with diverse footprints in the landscape, operating in 22 countries, and having some of the leading sites in Scandinavia. Kjell talks about the fundamental shift in the media paradigm. The talk is here
#15. Thomas Crampton, Michael Oreskes, former editor of IHT, NYTimes, “the future of content is quality”
“The future of content is quality. Quality will win, since the fundamental scare resource is the attention span of the audience. People do not have the time to absorb random information on the internet, and what they need is the professional skill and craft of journalism to make the data accessible and for journalists to do the work for the audience so that they can absorb it.” and Michael Oreskes cannot be more accurate. Watch the duo talk about content driven innovation. The talk is here
It’s been a very inspiring journey listening to veterans talk about online and media trends. More so, since most of these talks are part of the 2007 or 2008 SIME Edition, you realize that there is so much truth and accuracy in the statements. Thanks speakers, you are great.
