Yeonmi Park

North Korean defector and freedom fighter

For most Westerners North Korea represents something almost comical and incomprehensible. But for Yeonmi Park the movie Titanic changed everything, when her father smuggled it in (a criminal offense punishable by sentencing for 3 generations). After watching the Titanic, she realized that love is a feeling not just with the supreme leader but between people too. After losing her father, she and her mother somehow smuggled themselves into China and then into South Korea where she realized that everyone in the world knew the world of North Korea, but nobody did anything for it. Disappointed but with more passion than ever, she marched on to put her life on the line and to argue passionately for freeing the North Korean people from their totalitarian dictator.
