SIME Talks Season 2, Episode 3: What’s the next entrepreneurial hub / hot spot in the world?

Last year at SIME, a series of people were asked to name 1 city / place they thought would be the next hot spot / hub (in the next 2 - 3 years) for the digital scene in the world. Answers ranged from “Silicon Valhalla” (Scandinavian tradition), Berlin, Amsterdam, Shanghai, Beijing, Barcelona to a multiple other cities. And most entrepreneurs chose their own home / region they operate from as the next hub, either because they really like the place or they have not explored other options. I am guessing knowing the DNA of the crowd at SIME who are typically go global entrepreneurs, they would want to marry opportunity with capital and network. European cities being closer than other cities in Asia or South America for instance have a spill over effect probably helping smart entrepreneurs gravitate to the city.  Of course there were insights such as “I like all places since it helps me meet new kind of entrepreneurs”, and the bottom of the pyramid segment makes a lot of sense, but if we quantify it with hard numbers the usual suspects are revealed again.

What do you think? We are developing an in-house matrix of parameters that we can use to understand the vibrancy and buzz of the city - lets call it the “SIME Vibrancy Index” and we plan to present it soon. In the meantime go ahead, voice your views, do not let facts stop you from talking your gut out.

SIME - mobile business round table and beers with Tre

Because your mobile is more important than your pinky

SIME together with tre (or 3, the telecom company) is organizing a mobile business round table (and what’s the spice without a hint of pint) tomorrow in Stockholm.

And it goes by the tag line “because your mobile is more important than your pinky” which is not just a random WTF statement, but rather a line that was made at SIME last year. During one of the panels, when the moderator of the day, Ola Ahlvarsson made a quick survey of the audience if they would trade their mobile for their pinky, there was a sizable number that were perfectly fine in losing their pinky in lieu of the mobile phone, and if that’s the market demographics your mobile business is targeting, you got some die hard users of the gadget.

Event information:

Date: Thursday October 7, 2009
Time: 1700 - 1900
Venue: O-Baren Restaurant, Stureplan, Stockholm

And the facebook event invite can be found here

So are you going to O-Baren to learn more about the mobile business? We think you should.

Welcome!

The City of Stockholm joins Northern Europe’s leading Internet conference SIME

And we are proud to report that the City of Stockholm / Stockholm Business Region has joined forces with us to shine more spotlight onto the Scandinavian region to lead the ICT movement and to promote the ever evolving Scandinavian digital landscape. We could not be more thrilled as this means we are essentially carrying the official Scandinavian ICT flag (if there is one such) in the global scene, taking with us companies that are the pride of Scandinavia and bringing into Scandinavia, some of the thought leaders and coolest companies from all over the globe. This has always what SIME has taken pride about - the quality, the future of content and knowledge is quality (as Michael Oreskes said at SIME 2007) and we are happy to find more such interesting ways to promote good quality content, ideas and people. » Continue reading ‘The City of Stockholm joins Northern Europe’s leading Internet conference SIME’

SIME in a new dress + news from SIME Stockholm

Home Page: http://sime.nu

Actually we are in the process of giving our lovely SIME lady a new dress to rise and shine in the coming year. And we thought we should talk a little bit about this new dress that is being exclusively stiched by AD&D (our design partners) together with the SIME team. We have not radicalized anything yet, but hey its all about making those small baby steps isn’t it. And SIME took one such cute step last week on Friday with a new “dynamic” top banner that gives you info on the SIME conferences in an easier way than the previous drop-down listing. It’s pretty neat navigation and can take you deep into the pages without letting you skip the main picture. And the top navigation remains kind of stable for the old school web surfers.

Also,  the second part of the post, is about news from SIME Stockholm. We have revised the format a bit, to let our SIME friends engage a bit more into networking, and also have more focus on certain handpicked themes through workshops. More details below:

Agenda screen shots from http://sime.nu/09/stockholm/conference-agenda/conferenceshedule/ below:

sime-agenda_1

Firstly, the workshops will be held after the conference (tentatively, the conference is scheduled to end around 1500 on both days) with specific focus like communications, social media, voice, telephony, e-commerce trends etc with stalwarts and experts leading these sessions together with the audience. As you can see, we want to make the audience the rock stars together with our speakers and hence a combined effort through workshops not only makes things more focused but also gives the audience the chance to speak up a bit more and get what they need through the 2 days.

sime-agenda_2

Secondly, we plan to have a networking bazaar, a market place kind of setting where you can choose who you want to meet, which sector / industry do you want to be “tagged” in, all well assisted by our “experience manager” and the SIME team. We expect the usual SIME turn out (around 2000 or so) and hence we are talking really massive people-tagging here :)

sime-agenda_3

Third and finally, we have SIME Awards this year with a revised format. We hand pick a long-drawn list of “innovative and interesting” Scandinavian startup’s (no application fee, no nominations etc like last year), drill them down through 2 filters and a jury panel, and finally release a list of nominees (the number to be confirmed), building up to the conference day itself. So all the nominees get to come to the conference and experience the SIME magic!

And of course, SIME is heading to Copenhagen, Helsinki, Beijing (TBC) amongst other things SIME.

What do you think? Are we changing too much, or too little? What more would you want to see out of SIME this year. Shout out, we want to hear you!

Cheers,
The SIME team!

Interview with Nicklas Kullberg, PWC Sweden

We also had the chance to speak to Nicklas Kullberg, responsible for the Entertainment & Media industry of PwC Sweden about the to - be released publication. Below you will find the text of the quick EMail chat:

SIME(S): Can you tell us what exactly is the purpose of the launch of Outlook?  What kind of businesses do you think would need the information in the Outlook? And how relevant are they?
Nicklas (N): The Outlook helps companies and analysts to obtain up-to-date and relevant information of historical data and also forecasts for the coming five year for different segments of the media industry. We are very excited to notice that many media companies refer to our report in their business plans and the release of our Outlook is extensively covered by press throughout the world. The Outlook gives valuable help for companies that consider moving into new countries or into new segments of the industry to take opportunity of the dramatic change in the media landscape.
S: You released an Outlook version for 2008 - 2012 last year, covering similar segments. Which segments have seen dramatic changes in numbers in this publication compared to the last?
N: As we have prepared this year’s Outlook, the full extent of the international financial crisis, the shortage of credit and the cutbacks in consumer spending has yet to be determined. It is not clear whether and to what degree the various stimulus packages will change the slide. We do however know that the global economy is more interrelated than ever and that developments in one country can quickly affect others. We have seen that the economic downturn has not changed the underlying economic factors for digital but influenced the timing of the industry change. We see new consumption habits feeding through to revenues in emerging areas like mobile access, digital music and video games which we believe will be growth segments in the future. As the emerging digital behaviors become more dominant among consumers, a new generation of ad-funded revenue models will emerge, seeking to reflect and capitalize on the evolving consumption habits. In the short-run, we project a dramatic down-turn for segments such as TV-advertising and magazines as well as newspaper and business-to-business publishing. By 2011, several segments will have consolidated, the least loyal customers will have already left to be replaced by higher-quality products valued both by consumers and advertisers
S: Where do you get the data from? How credible are these sources?
N: We gather historical data from external sources such as government agencies, trade associations and other related entities. In instances where the information is used indirectly, the sources are proprietary. The forecast information is based on forecast scenario models based on factors such as economic, demographic, technological, institutional, behavioral and competitive. Since we have now produced forecasts for the media industry for 10 years in a row, we are confident that the sources we use are reliable. To our help in gathering the data, we use Wilkofsky Gruen Associates that is a well-reputated US based research and analyst firm.
S: And where can the people purchase the report? Is there a preview / sample available before purchasing the actual document?
N: To order a copy of the full 600-plus-page edition, please visit www.pwc.com/outlook. If you want to have a preview of the book, you can send a request to me at nicklas.kullberg@se.pwc.com.
We thank Nicklas for his time, and we at SIME are curious to take a glance at the report for more than a couple of reasons!

Almost there Barcelona

So we are all set here - its a great setting, SIME style, lets call it. A mini lounge on stage, extremely elegant and slick. And what goes on the screen also looks that way. I had the privilege of going through very quickly some of the presentations of the speakers, and they look extremely enriching to say the least. What I will try to do today during the event is to summarize at the end of the every discussion session and post it live to keep all our friends updated. And of course 120 character updates are always on our twitter channel

The Barcelona seasoning to the SIME recipe

The happy SIME crew is in Barcelona, waiting for the action to begin. It starts at 9:30 in the morning and goes on till 1330 in the afternoon at Palau de Congressos de Catalunya. The focus of this event is to understand the variables that are shaping the global digital trends, and particularly focus on how the Spanish digital scene is contributing in this race. At SIME, we make conference programs that strive to find the balance between, educating and teaching people about the generics of the industry but at the same time also help find ‘nirvana’ in the details.
